You can read, comment, vote and cheer without signing up. We never ask for your name, email address or phone number.
Comments, votes and cheers
We don't store IP addresses. When you comment, vote, react or cheer, your IP address is turned into a one-way code (an HMAC hash with a secret key) and only that code is kept. It lets us count one vote per device and stop spam, but it can't be turned back into your IP address.
- Comments: the text, the nickname shown, a hash of the edit key saved on your device (so only you can edit or delete it) and hashed codes of your IP address.
- Votes, reactions and cheers: your choice, hashed codes of your IP address and browser, the page language and, for polls and cheers, the country our host detects (such as “JP”) — never the IP address itself.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which articles are read. In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, analytics and ad storage are off by default (Google Consent Mode v2), so no analytics cookies are set there unless you agree in Google's consent message. Google Analytics 4 doesn't log or store IP addresses.
We also use PostHog (servers in the US) to see which pages are visited and how buttons such as votes, cheers and shares are used. It runs without cookies and stores nothing on your device. To tell visits apart, PostHog's servers turn your IP address and browser details into a one-way hash with a key that changes every day, then drop the IP address without storing it.
Ads and affiliate banners
We show ads through Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other websites. Google's advertising cookies let Google and its partners serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, ad storage is off by default and personalised ads appear only if you agree in Google's consent message. You can turn off personalised ads in Google Ads Settings, or opt out of other vendors' cookies for personalised ads at www.aboutads.info.
Some articles for readers living in Korea show Coupang Partners banners. They appear only when your device's time zone is set to Korea; your browser checks this and doesn't send it to us. If you buy on Coupang after clicking one, we receive a commission, at no extra cost to you. Coupang may set its own cookies when a banner loads or when you click it. The banners don't change what we write.
What we save on your device
These are saved in your browser's storage (localStorage) and stay on your device:
hb:comment-keyA random key that lets you edit or delete your comments. We keep only a hash of it.hb:comment-nameThe nickname shown on your comments.hb:my-commentsWhich comments you wrote on this device (up to 200).hb:poll:{id}Your answer in each poll.hb:react:{id}The reactions you tapped on each article.hb:cheer:{id}:{day}Who you cheered for today.hb:readArticles you've read recently (up to 200), so we don't suggest them again.hb:install-dismissed-atWhen you closed the “Add to Home Screen” prompt.hb:locale-suggest-dismissedThat you closed the language suggestion.
These disappear when you close the tab (sessionStorage):
hb:install-seenThe “Add to Home Screen” prompt was already shown.hb:locale-suggest-seenThe language suggestion was already shown.hb:celebrate:{id}The D-day celebration was already played.
Cookies: NEXT_LOCALE remembers your language until you close the browser. Outside the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Google Analytics sets _ga and _ga_* cookies. Google AdSense and Coupang may also set their own advertising cookies (see “Ads and affiliate banners”).
How long we keep data
- Comments: until you delete them (they're erased from our database), or until we remove them or the article.
- Vote, reaction and cheer records: for as long as the poll, article or ranking they belong to stays on the site.
- Google Analytics: event data is kept for 2 months, Google's shortest setting.
- PostHog: event data is kept for 1 year.
- Emails you send us: only as long as we need to handle your request.
- Our hosting provider keeps short-lived technical logs, which can include IP addresses, for security.
Services we use
Vercel (hosting), Neon (database), and Google and PostHog (analytics) process data for us. Google AdSense and Coupang Partners, described above, collect data with their own cookies under their own privacy policies. We don't sell your data or hand it to advertisers ourselves. Under some US state laws, Google's personalised ads may count as “sharing”; you can turn them off in Google Ads Settings (see above).
Your choices
You can delete your own comments at any time from the same device. You can clear everything we saved in your browser by deleting this site's data in your browser settings. For anything else, contact us.
