Japan has already suffered repeated typhoon damage this year. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that Champi could have a major impact around next weekend, and its path remains uncertain, with a possible turn toward mainland Japan.
How bad has this year been?
Typhoon Doksuri struck eastern Japan on September 21–22, killing 12 people and leaving 3 missing. In Chiba Prefecture, Oshima recorded 832 mm of rain in 48 hours, a new observed record, and four embankments collapsed. In June, Typhoon Chamí struck the Tokyo area, forcing more than 370,000 people to evacuate.
Should travelers to Japan cancel their trips?
The Korean Peninsula is expected to see little direct impact at present. Travelers planning a trip to Japan next week should monitor local weather forecasts closely and check with their airline or hotel for changes, rather than cancel in advance.
