What is drawing people to Mukho?

Mukho, a harbor town in Donghae, Gangwon Province, is attracting younger visitors as a small-town destination. According to Yonhap News, the area was featured in the recently published 'Trend Korea 2027' for its compact, walkable routes, quiet harbor atmosphere, and local character. It has also been nicknamed the 'Santorini of Korea.'

How much interest is there?

According to Shinhan Card data cited by Yonhap, souvenir shop usage in Mukho from January to May 2026 rose 2,113% compared with the same period in 2024. People in their 20s and 30s accounted for 74% of that spending. Instagram posts tagged #묵호 number about 64,000.

How do you get there?

The KTX takes about 2 hours 30 minutes from Seoul. From Mukho Port, visitors can walk to Nongolldam-gil, Dodaebi-gol Skyvalley, and coastal viewpoints.

Why is it considered a different kind of trip?

Rather than large tourist facilities, Mukho offers alleys climbing the hills above the sea, an old harbor village, and everyday neighborhood life. The city of Donghae says it has been improving old alleys and stairways in the downtown area while protecting local history and scenery. Jeong Ha-yeon, the city's public relations and audit director, said the goal is to keep residents' lives intact while letting visitors stay longer and come back.

For international fans

Mukho is a good fit for travelers who want a slower, walk-focused trip rather than a major attraction. Visitors can combine a stroll through the harbor and hillside alleys with a day trip from Seoul by KTX.
