What is the residence card?
The Alien Registration Card, usually called the residence card, is the identity document issued to foreigners who are registered in Korea. As of October 2026, it is still the main proof of identity for many everyday tasks, from banking to certain official procedures.
How long does issuance take?
Processing times vary by office and application type, and they change, so check the current estimate on the Immigration Service website (immigration.go.kr) or with your local immigration office before you apply. The official site lists electronic civil services for residence-related applications, which can save a trip in person.
What can you do while you wait?
While the physical card is pending, you can use the Immigration Service's online portal to track and manage applications. Keep your application receipt safely, since it is useful proof of your pending status.
Mobile banking with your residence card
A new residence card verification service, launched on September 18, lets registered foreigners verify their identity from a mobile phone without visiting a bank in person, similar to the process for Korean citizens. You submit your card information through the bank's app, and the Ministry of Justice confirms the card's authenticity to the bank in real time.
This matters because many bank branches are closing. According to the Korea Federation of Banks, the number of branches with English-speaking tellers dropped from 33 in February 2025 to 24 as of June 2025.
Carrying your ID
Foreigners registered in Korea are generally expected to carry their residence card or a valid ID at all times. Check the Immigration Service's guidance for the latest rules, since obligations can change.
Protect yourself from scams
The Immigration Service warns of voice phishing calls that pretend to be from immigration officials, and of fake e-Arrival Card websites. Official immigration staff will not ask you to transfer money by phone. When in doubt, call the official number listed on immigration.go.kr.
For international fans
If you are living in Korea, keep your residence card number and application details handy when you use online banking or government services. For the latest fees, processing times, and rules, always confirm on the official Immigration Service site, since information can change.
